2018_Fire_Muster_history.pdf
Fire Muster history dates back more than 30 years - 2018September 3, 2018 Burnsville Eagan Sun/Thisweek News reports on the upcoming Fire Muster and its history since 1980.

Over a five-day stretch, Fire Muster features beer tasting, entertainment, fireworks, carnival rides, children’s activities, emergency personnel demonstrations, food and beverages served by local restaurants, and the community and fire truck parade – the latter of which started it all.

Burnsville’s community celebration began in 1980, evolving from a smaller, neighborhood-based activity. During the late 1970s, Burnsville resident and fire equipment collector Roger Jackson and some of his friends entertained children each summer by displaying his collection at what then was known as Diamondhead Mall, capping the day with a short parade of equipment down Nicollet Avenue.

In 1980, as the community considered the possibility of a citywide celebration, Jackson suggested to a group of interested residents and business people that perhaps a fire muster patterned after fire musters popular in New England might work. City officials liked the idea and the Burnsville Fire Muster & Community Celebration became an official city event.

A nonprofit corporation was formed to organize the celebration. Dedicated volunteers, augmented by nonprofit groups in town, organized, promoted, and staged the event. Fundraising proved to be an important and daunting activity. Business donations, button sales and income from concessions became vital funding sources, and continue to be to this day. Jackson and the committee envisioned a community block party, coronation of a queen and, most importantly, a parade of antique and modern fire equipment.

Dan Hendrikson, a former Burnsville Fire Department captain, was placed in charge of that parade and remained active in organizing Fire Muster events for over 20 years. Hendrikson was honored as the grand marshal of the fire truck parade on Sept. 11, 1999.

Burnsville’s current fire chief, B.J. Jungmann, along with members of his department are in charge of the Fire Truck Parade. Though the first fire truck parade contained an impressive array of some 50 units, it now boasts more than 100. Equipment comes from throughout the Midwest, ranging from horse-drawn hand pumpers (circa 1900) to the latest in firefighting machinery. In 2004, the Fire Muster’s Fire Truck parade was cited in the Guinness Book of World Records for holding the longest Fire Truck Parade in the World. Over 120 trucks were represented in that parade.

Today, Fire Muster is bigger than ever.

The Community and Fire Truck Parade were merged into one parade in 2014 after they were previously held on separate days – the Fire Truck Parade on Saturday and the Community Parade on Sunday – up until that time. The combined parade will be from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8.

Most Fire Muster events are held Friday and Saturday in Civic Center Park. The Heart of the City and other locations throughout Burnsville also host events.

A full schedule of events appears inside this edition and online at BurnsvilleFireMuster.org. More information and photos from the event will be posted at SunThisweek.com.

Burnsville Fire Muster makes it into the Guinness World Book of Records 2004It's a trick question: How many fire trucks do you need in a parade to get into the Guinness Book of World Records?

"Well, technically, I suppose one would be a record," said Kevin Stirtz, a little sheepishly. That's because Stirtz and the city of Burnsville will be establishing a new world record category when they gather fire trucks from five states for the city's annual Fire Muster celebration Sept. 10-12. Their record won't be easy to break they hope to have 100 trucks, the results 85.
