Neighborhood Bock party stands the test of time - Hayes Drive - North River Hills 2019 Neighborhood block party stands the test of time- by John Gessner August 16, 2019 Sun/Thisweek News
Hayes Drive event marks 30 years
No fan of split-level houses, Judy Corrigan never fully made peace with the one she and husband Kevin bought in 1986.
The young couple figured they’d stay in their Burnsville neighborhood for a few years before moving on up to a proper two-story abode.
“But because of the people here, we said ‘No way,’ ” Corrigan said. “So we added a little onto our house, and we’re still here.”
Corrigan and her neighbors will hold their 30th annual block party Saturday, Aug. 24, with food, beer, games, a bonfire and rituals that have survived the tests of time and neighborhood turnover.
The late summer or early fall event typically draws 80 to 100 people who live or lived on Hayes Drive, Hayes Court, Prescott Court or 27th Avenue. The neighborhood is in the North River Hills area of northeast Burnsville.
The houses began sprouting in the early ’60s, built by Pemtom, a ubiquitous developer in the city’s formative years.
“We still have original owners in houses along here,” said Corrigan, whose children are 27 and 30. Between the elders, people of her generation, their millennial children and the kids they’re starting to have, Corrigan figures the neighborhood encompasses four generations.
She and a few other block party veterans discussed the event in the backyard of Hayes Drive resident Earl LaMott, who has held neighborhood Christmas parties since 1978 and keeps a standing 5 p.m. appointment for anyone wanting to stop for a beer or glass of wine.
The block party was “the highlight of the summer,” said Connie Yandle, a neighbor of LaMott’s. “My kids lived for it. I lived for it. I loved it. It was talking to everybody that you didn’t always see, and lots of good food.”
Most of the events were held on a large lot comprised of LaMott’s and Yandle’s backyards, which share an underground pipeline.
Since her husband, Larry, died of cancer three years ago, the party has been moved up the block to the Roscoe and Berkowitz homes.
“They had the younger kids and the energy to keep it going,” said Yandle, who still has a hand in the event.
“I bring the beer tent,” she said. “We all take turns with what we bring as far as food.”
Some of the games and activities change from year to year but a few are sacred, including the “Larry Yandle Egg Taws.” Raised in North Carolina, Yandle presided over the egg toss with his booming, Southern voice, yelling “Taws!” at the paired contestants, who took another step back with each command until hands and pavement were wet with broken eggs.
“No one could say it like him,” said Earl LaMott, who lost his wife, Gail, to cancer in January.
Another of his neighbors has also died. Bill Bennewitz, who moved out of his home a couple of years ago, died July 1 at age 96. He was a Marine Corps fighter pilot who flew in some of the first air strikes over mainland Japan during World War II and earned five Air Medals.
Bill and his wife, Norma, were charter members of the church that became River Hills United Methodist Church at Highway 13 and River Hills Drive. He drove a school bus after retiring as a salesman for the A.B. Dick Duplicating Products Co.
“He was a great guy,” LaMott said. “I enjoyed him tremendously. Very humble.”
LaMott’s son, Tony, remembers the block parties of his youth.
“All the adults would sit by the fire and we’d just run around the neighborhood at night playing night games — flashlight tag and stuff like that — until we got old enough to actually sit by the fire and listen to the stories,” said Tony, 37. he said. “Larry (Yandle) would bring out the banjo or the guitar.”
A chili, salsa or appetizer cook-off is an annual staple. The winner’s traveling trophy, provided by Jean Schaefer, was one of her son’s old baseball trophies, retrofitted for the cook-off.
“It was pretty big. Things fell off of it and we just continued. For a few years it had salsa or peppers on it,” Schaefer said.
“But last year it was changed to a wooden spoon that’s spray-painted gold, so people are now happy to get the prize because they don’t have to drag that trophy home with them,” Judy Corrigan added.
The daylong event begins sedately enough with 9 a.m. coffee, a bike ride or even yoga, Connie Yandle said.
“And then we go for naps,” she said. “And then we tap the keg along about 3 or 4 o’clock. And then the cook-off. And then we do dinner usually around 5, 5:30-ish, and more games after dinner.”
Then a movie for the kids, the adult bonfire and, for some, a Sunday morning reunion for leftovers and cleanup.
“A house is just a house,” Earl LaMott said, “but it’s your neighbors around you that really make the place.”
