The first catholic churches were cabinsSt. Peters Catholic Church was established in 1840 before Minnesota was a state, as its first Catholic Church. The original structure was a log cabin. Priests stationed at St. Peters were missionaries to early settlers before their own parishes, like St. John the Baptist in Byrnesville, were established. The "Historic Church", which still stands in shown and the location of the log church. The first services for St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Byrnesville were in the Byrne cabin until a cabin church was built.
This replica of the log church is found on display at St. Peters Church in Mendota.

First Catholic church - St Paul Minnesota 1840In 1840, the Bishop of Dubuque sends Father Lucien Galtier to minister to French Canadians recently settled in Pig’s Eye, a community that would eventually become Saint Paul. Volunteers assist with the building of a modest log cabin chapel, and the construction is completed within a few days.
A similar log cabin would be the first St. John the Baptist Church, then in Byrnesville/Burnsville.
In July, a papal decree establishes the Diocese of Saint Paul, encompassing the Catholic population north of Iowa, including Minnesota and the Dakotas from Lake Superior to the Missouri River – at the time, about 3,000 people. Bishop Joseph Cretin is named the first bishop.
